A look back in racing history

TEN YEARS AGO – DECEMBER 2013:

THE Brisbane Cup at Albion Park goes to Kiss Me Ketut, trained in Victoria by Dave Burnett. The winning margin was a neck over Farmor Las Vegas. The gallop was 29.82 for a first prize of $75,000.

HOBART’S 1000 is won by Paw Licking, trained in Victoria by Kel Greenough for Allan Lang. Paw Licking scored a half neck over Black Magic Opal in 25.64 for a $75,000 collect.

THE Sale Cup is also a group one event of $75,000 to the winner. Western Australia’s Paul Stuart, of Miata fame, scored with Dyna Nalin who defeated Phenominal and Dyna Willow in the 650 metres final.

20 YEARS AGO – DECEMBER 2003:

IT’S another Victorian win in the Hobart 1000. This time it’s the John Galea trained Nobody Knew who romped home by five lengths.

BOMBASTIC SHIRAZ, trained by Darren Cairns, wins the Top Gun at the Meadows. In the placings were Spring Secret and Bogie Leigh.

BOGIE LEIGH returned to her home state for a quick group one backup. She won the Brisbane Cup at Albion Park by five lengths in 29.83. Smooth Syrah and Serial Pest were the placegetters.

30 YEARS AGO – DECEMBER 1993:

EXTRA’S BOY for Graeme Bate justifies a short price of $2.25 by winning the Hobart 1000. It was a narrow victory from box one over Starlight Rebel and Blackwood Oscar.

MELBOURNE’S Olympic Park is the venue for the Silver Chief, Victoria’s equivalent of a Derby for male dogs. $17 chance Plugger Fever for Len Ketelaar overcomes his box four draw to win the group two feature for a first prize of $20,000.

THE first running of the Brisbane Cup at Albion Park following the closure of the Gabba goes to National Leader for Pat Davis of NSW. The race was known as the Christmas Stocking at the time. National Leader started from box three and was too good for a couple of very talented locally trained bitches, Toban Leah for Dave Brett and Conquering Wind for Tony Zammit.
