Weekly wrap of racing at Ipswich with MIKE HILL

VETERAN trainer Ned Snow had a day out at Ipswich last Friday.

For the first time in his lengthy career, the Purga-based conditioner rugged up four winners, including three members of the same litter.

“That’s the best day numbers-wise I’ve had at a meeting,” Snow said.

He was successful with Extreme Tension (Maiden, 431m), Electric Man (5th Grade, 431m) and Open Jewel (4th/5th Grade, 431m) for the Munro family and also produced Austrian Jewel to win the feature Shipwreck At Stud Best 8 Sprint (431m) for owner Robert Peschke.

Coincidentally, Snow owns Shipwreck with his daughter Tanya and trained the outstanding sprinter to a wonderful 18-win career that included the Rockhampton Cup and Vince Curry Memorial Maiden and prizemoney touching $324,000.

The Munro trio are members of an Out Of Range-Go Lou Go litter that Snow is having a lot of success with.

And a fourth sibling, Mischievous Lou, was successful the following night – also at Ipswich – and then again at Albion Park on Thursday night.

So far the litter has collected 18 wins – all since mid-March.

“They haven’t been racing that long,” said Snow, who had previously trained the well-bred mother Go Lou Go (Barcia Bale- Ironbar Jill) for the Munro family.

He considers the litter of 10 ‘above average’.

“Mischievous Lou is the pick of the litter so far and she’s the one going on with it,” he said.

“She’d only had one look at Albion Park before last night’s win.

“I had intended trialling her there but when they were looking for extra 5th grade noms I decide to give her a go.

“It turned out great and the owners are happy

“Much better than a trial.”

Mischievous Lou has now pushed her record to four wins and three seconds from 10 outings with prizemoney just above $21,500.

Snow also has a big opinion of Glastonbury Man (8: 3-1-1), one of four multiple winners in the litter.

“He’s all muscle and he’s going to be a good dog,” he said.

ADDING to Snow’s success, a number of trainers also led in multiple winners at Ipswich during the week.

Peter O’Reilly had the Midas touch last Saturday night rugging up winners Hot Tyson, a $2.60 fancy in the 520m Pathway, and Tarawi Lee ($5), in the 4th/5th Grade over 520m.

The Pauline Byers kennel produced a winning trio on Tuesday with Spring Boorowa ($3.20 fav), Spring Fern ($3) and Spring Tara ($3.10 fav) saluting; while Jeff Crawford picked up a double with Sidonia ($5) and Bootin’ Boodie.

Doubles were popular on Thursday with Gary Moore (Panama Power and Coal Crusher), Mal Cuneo (Selective, Bemboka Blue) and Lindsay Joyce (Splittin’ Tens, Sivo Banner) all rugging up two winners each.

IN a poignant moment on Thursday afternoon, five members of the Ipswich staff were farewelled after the final race.

Operations manager Mark Perkins is returning to the AFL after accepting a position with the Central Trinity Beach Bulldogs club in Cairns, while Sandra McAllan (office administration), Anne O’Dempsey (office administration), Helen Lamberton (kennel supervisor) and Trish Fuller (kennel supervisor) are retiring.

Queensland Greyhound Racing Club (QGRC) committee member Rob Essex, who served on the Ipswich committee for many years and was president on two occasions, said it was sad to lose so much experience on the one day.

“The four women have done a super job,” Essex said.

“They’ve been very loyal and conscientious over many years.

“Both Sandra and Helen have given more than 15 years’ service and Anne has been with the club for 12 years.

“They’ve been great servants and they will all be missed.”

Perkins, who only joined the Ipswich operation in February after 19 years as general manager of football at the Aspley Hornets AFL club in Brisbane, said he had accepted a similar position in Cairns.

“I was offered an opportunity at Trinity Beach that I couldn’t say no to,” he said.

Like the four women, Perkins ended his tenure with the club on Thursday – Ipswich’s last meeting until May 24 due to the annual Ipswich Show.

Perkins said he was heading to Cairns on Saturday and would begin his new job on Monday.

“I have enjoyed my time at Ipswich,” he said.
