SANDOWN’S massive Cup carnival in May has had to undergo a change of dates due to the lockdown of the country because of COVID-19.

Sandown was gearing up for the running of the Group 1 Sandown Cup (715m), Sapphire Crown (515m) and Harrison Dawson (515m) in the middle of May culminating in a gala race night on May 22.

COVID-19’s lockdown of the country has seen the Sandown Club reorganise it trio of glamour races.

The carnival will now be:

May 7

Best 8 (715m)

G1 Sapphire Crown Heats (515m)

Best 32 females nominated.

May 14

G1 Sapphire Crown Final (515m)

$50,000 to the winner

G1 Harrison Dawson Heats (515m)

Best 32 male greyhounds nominated

May 21

G1 Harrison Dawson Final (515m)

$50,000 to the winner

G1 Sandown Cup Heats (715m)

May 28

G1 Sandown Cup Final (715m)

$50,000 to the winner

Club racing manager Mick Floyd said the rescheduled Cup carnival had been given GRV approval after the Sandown Club had presented it with an alternative carnival forced upon it by the current racing, and general, restrictions.

“We will also stage a series of Best 8 races over all distances throughout May and June to cater for the best dogs in training,” said Floyd.

“It will be a Best 8 over 515m and 715m on one week, with a Best 8 over 595m the following Thursday night.”

The finals of the three Group 1s had been planned for May 22 at a gala race night at which Sandown normally attracts a huge crowd along to a glamour night of racing.

“Under the lockdown restrictions on racing, there is no need for us to have one gala night of racing, so we have decided to spread the three Group 1 races over those three nights,” he said.

The Sandown Cup normally carries $175,000 to the winner and the Sapphire Crown and Harrison Dawson $100,000 each to the winner.

“While our club is disappointed we are unable to present the very best of greyhound racing on a one night, gala night,” said Floyd. “We are still ensuring the races are run.

“Obviously 2021 will be something to look forward to when we are back to normal.”
