Each month Chase’s DAVID BRASCH highlights the stories behind Queensland’s most recent complete monthly breeding statistics: October, 2023
IT’S no secret among those breeders with their ears close to what’s happening in the world of bloodlines that the first offspring by Equalizer being educated are showing plenty of ability.
Equalizer (KC And All-Captivating), you will all remember, was the great sprinter, winner of the G1 Brisbane Cup, twice the winner of the G3 Super Sprinters and placed or a finalist in nine other feature races.
Four of those were also Group 1s.
To date, Equalizer is the sire of just one litter to the racetrack, that from Hara’s Penny and already five of the six to have raced are winners and they will not be 2YO until February.
Equalizer is the sire of a one-dog- one-bitch litter out of Zipping Blondie (five wins, 14 placings, $26,000) whelped recently in Queensland.
She is a litter sister to Zipping Garth the high-class stud dog and the top-class stayer Zipping Truvy, whose first litter is just starting to race with promise.
The Equalizer-Zipping Blonde mating brings together a fabulous 3×4 double of the great Collision.
PUT up your hand if you spoke to Mick or Selena Zammit, or Selena’s mum Lillian Jones, about buying a pup from the Hooked On Scotch-Kealoah litter just whelped.
Yes … just about EVERYONE!
Kealoah (Spring Gun-Just Itchin’) has whelped four dogs and five bitches to Hooked On Scotch, her second litter, and the Zammit family was inundated by requests to buy into the bloodlines.
But Mick, Selena and Lillian have decided to keep them all.
And why wouldn’t they.
The fact Kealoah’s first litter, by Sennachie, has (to time of writing) won 85 races and $1.8 million means it was always going to be hard to let go any of the second litter.
Of course the standout is Million Dollar Chase winner and Albion Park track record holder Jay Is Jay.
But consider the fact Jay Is Jay also has won the G2 Qld Derby, G3 Golden Ticket, G3 Qld Flame, Winter Sprint, Origin Match, been second in the G1 Topgun and G1 Gold Bullion, and he is far from being a one-race wonder.
Every one of the litter is a prolific winner: five of them have more than 10 wins and five have earned more than $50,000.
And the mating to Hooked On Scotch brings in some fabulous crosses … proven over and over again.
Any chance of a pup from the litter, Mick?
MANIPULATE (Barcia Bale-Speculate) was a very, very good race bitch from the Craig Chappelow kennel in Sydney.
She won nine races and was placed 22 times for $54,000 in stakes, four of those wins at Wenty and she won to 600m.
Manipulate is a litter sister to superstar Orchestrate (23 wins, $573,000) as well as the classy Interrogate (13 wins, $45,000) and Assassinate (19 wins, $67,000). Eight of the nine in the litter won.
Orchestrate has been sold to stand stud in Ireland.
Now Manipulate has whelped a litter of four dogs and eight bitches by boom sire Aussie Infrared (think Aussie Rocks and Big Energy first and second in the recent G1 Melbourne Cup).
It’s the highly proven Aussie Infrared-Barcia Bale cross.
DARREN Johnstone could not contain himself during Maggie Moo Moo’s long and prolific race career.
The daughter of Fernando Bale-Stay Warm won 10 races and $182,000. She won the G3 Super Stayers, was second in the G1 Qld Cup and a finalist at G1 level in the Association Cup, Sandown Cup etc.
Maggie Moo Moo has whelped four dogs and four bitches by Hooked On Scotch.
It’s the proven Nicki Fields-Fernando Bale cross that produced G1 stars Poke The Bear and Out Of Range.
Her dam, Stay Warm, has been a prolific producer, but Darren is the first to admit he was surprised Maggie Moo Moo became a high-class Group stayer.
Stay Warm did win a 500m maiden at Broken Hill, but was primarily a 400m speedster.
THE first progeny of Aston Rupee are hitting the education tracks and early reports are that they could be something else.
Brent Kline was never going to take a “punt” on him. He was always confident he would make it at stud. That’s why Brent has just whelped two dogs and four bitches from his classy race bitch and producer Shilo (Fernando Bale-Keune).
Shilo has already produced litters by Zambora Brockie, Hooked On Scotch and a very young litter by Aussie Infrared just starting to race.
She is already dam of Isurava (25 wins, $111,000), Cobblepot (22 wins, $93,000), Carton Of Bear (14 wins, $87,000), Bat Sign (15 wins, $58,000) … the list is long.
Brent has taken a punt on the fact intense inbreeding will work in this mating.
Both Aston Rupee and Shilo are bred on the Gable Dodge-Barcia Bale-Elite State cross.
RICKY Hassell’s Bundy track record breaker Elegant Eleanor (Fabregas-Befitting) has whelped four dogs and four bitches by speed sire Beast Unleashed.
“Eleanor” won 17 races and $48,000 but also won the Country Cup and was a finalist in the G2 Qld Futurity (the race that makes broodbitches).
SOME Idea, a finalist in the QGOLD Veterans and winner of 13 races on the track, has been given her chance at stud, recently whelping a one-dog-six-bitch litter by that sensational sprinter Ferdinand Boy.
A daughter of Vee Man Vane-Impossible, Some Idea came from a litter of 11 and 10 of those were winners.
It is the direct damline of former Bundy track great Shining Raider.
VERY interesting mating recently, that of Sunset Spitfire and Riverboat Queen, has produced six dogs and three bitches.
Riverboat Queen (Fernando Bale-Slip Sliding) was a Capalaba Futurity finalist and she won 13 races and $37,000. Her litter brother, Werina Express, won 16 races and $86,000.
What is fabulous about this mating is that Sunset Spitfire is out of a daughter of Fabregas and Riverboat Queen is by Fernando Bale. The Fabregas-Fernando Bale cross is one of the strongest seen in this country in recent times.
Interesting, too, is that Mepunga Blazer (sire of Sunset Spitfire) has produced G1 Sandown Cup winner Korda from a daughter of Fernando Bale.
IT’S been difficult for Queensland breeders to ignore the sterling performances by Sennachie’s champion son Jay Is Jay.
Darryl McGrath has watched in awe the great Million Dollar Chase winner.
That’s one of the reasons why Darryl put his proven broodbitch No Clyde Needed (Dyna Villa-Miss Elly Mae) to Sennachie to produced six dogs and four bitches recently.
No Clyde Needed has a litter by Zipping Garth racing at the moment and the standout is Capalaba Futurity winner Indiana Wind.
