TEN YEARS AGO – SEPTEMBER 2012

BYE BYE BUCKS for Ken Lewis wins the Group 2 Black Top at the Gardens. The placegetters were Zara Zulu and Spiral Ballerina.

TRANSCEND TIME, trained by Mark Azzopardi, wins the Gr 2 Bob Payne Spring Sprint at Wentworth Park. It’s a four lengths win over Mr. Clydesdale and Leeroy Rocker.

PETIE PIE, trained by Springsure based policeman Bill Boon, wins the  Rockhampton Cup, leading all the way from box two. Starting price was $8.80.

 

TWENTY YEARS AGO – SEPTEMBER 2002

THE NATIONAL grand finals are run at Albion Park. In The Frame for Eric Castle wins the Sprint and Boomeroo for Michael Edwards takes out the Distance. Both were trained in Victoria.

WESTEND PRINCE for Peter Giles wins the Gr 2 Sir John Dillon Memorial at Sandown.

HANNALORE wins the Ayr Cup over 487m. It was the last day of racing at the north Queensland track. Frank and Edie Hancock, then based in Townsville, trained Hannalore.

 

THIRTY YEARS AGO – SEPTEMBER 1992

INSTALLATION of the greyhound track at Albion Park, inside the harness circuit, commences, with a view to a February 1993 opening.

THE GABBA’S main premierships for the year are clear cut, even with four months to run. Tony Zammit has a 63 points margin as the leading trainer, ahead of Pauline Fruend. Beverley Behm is 61 points clear of Jack and Betty Fiztgerald in the owners premiership.

NSW COUNTRY Championship final at Wentworth Park is a walk in the park for the 1-4 ($1.25) favourite Dilston Prince, trained by J. Murley. It was a seven lengths win from box three.
