TEN YEARS AGO, JUNE 2014
XYLIA ALLEN, trained by Jenny Hunt for Janice Wheeler, win the gr 1 Albion Park Gold Cup, covering the 710 metres distance in race record time of 41.71.
IPSWICH increases the distance of its Winter Cup from 630 metres to 732 metres. The Christina Harman trained Wag Tail wins the first running over the longer distance by fourteen lengths. She ran a time of 43.56, a record which still stands ten years later.
ICONIC broadcaster Paul Ambrosoli retires after an illustrious career behind the microphone. Tim Newbold steps into those big shoes.
TWENTY YEARS AGO – JUNE 2004
TOSS O’REILLY, a son of top sprinter Faithful Hawk, wins the Albion Park Gold Cup over 710 metres by three lengths for Victorian trainer Peter Giles. Irinka Barbie and Endless Pit ran the placings.
PAUA TO BURN for Steven White wins the gr 1 Laurels at Sandown by seven lengths in 29.58.
ART MANN, trained by Michael Zammit for thoroughbred racing’s trainer Bryan Guy and jockey Michael Rodd, wins the Queensland Derby at Albion Park. Art Mann was the second reserve for the race and gained a start following scratchings.
THIRTY YEARS AGO – JUNE 1994
TAP DANCE, trained by Ron Gill, wins the gr 1 Peter Mosman Classic at Wentworth Park. A $3.50 chance, Tap Dance beat the $2.25 favourite Gallant Ruler by two lengths.
SHINING OSTI, a $4.50 chance for Alan Chauncy, wins the Queensland Cup at Beenleigh. From box one Shining Osti claimed the $12,000 first prize. The race favourite Look Out Max finished second.
THE MGRA, which races at Melbourne’s Olympic Park, faces a doubtful future at that venue following news of a proposed tunnel and road going through the back straight of the racetrack, as part of the City Link project.
