Industry’s next wave in the spotlight

July was quite a month for our young participants.

Sixteen-year-old Hunter Valley participant Madison Kedwell kicked off proceedings, handling a Group One finalist and placegetter after, Out of Style, trained by her parents, Chris and Sarah, placed third in the Group One Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal Final at Wentworth Park.

Fellow Hunter Valley youngster, Zac Shoesmith, was rewarded for years of patience and dedication, putting the lead and collar on his first winner, with Not Clifford, trained by his long-time friend and mentor, Anne Foley, saluting at Maitland.

There was a large contingent of extremely proud and emotional family members and friend’s trackside on the night.

Zac suffers with a medical condition, which prevents him from doing a lot of the things he loves. However, greyhound racing has been his saving grace and he looks forward to being at every Maitland meeting on a Monday night.

On the same night as Zac’s triumphant win, at Richmond, young participant, Annalise Zahra led in her first winner, with Big Town Jinx saluting for trainer, Trevor Robinson, with her best friend, Rylee Mcguiness, a very happy supporter, trackside.

Fifteen-year-old South Australian enthusiast, Zali Newman, knows exactly what she wants in life and that’s to fuel her passion and ambition for greyhound racing and to help our retired racers find their forever home.

Her new venture, Pawsome Creations, is her brainchild and the result of her love of sewing and designing jackets for our four-legged fur babies in all shapes, sizes and styles.

She recently stepped-out for her first market stall appearance, which was a resounding success and has now taken her venture online, recently adding raincoats to her impressive catalogue of options.

Zali, along with her greys, Sloane and Lewis, will be pounding the pavement during August to raise funds for guide dogs. You can donate by visiting the link https://www.pawgust.com.au/fundraisers/zarinewman/pawgust and you can follow her Facebook page, called Pawsome Creations.

Greyhounds are the ultimate in defying the odds and WA chaser, First Look, can certainly attest to that.

Despite only racing with one eye, the beautifully bred son of Tommy Shelby and Joker Poker, prepared by multiple Group One winning conditioner, Steve Withers, already has two impressive victories and two minor placings from six outings next to his name.

During June, he posted a sizzling 27.25, best-of-the-night performance from box one over the 488m at Mandurah, with ‘Clive’ emulating another renowned chaser from 2006/2007, who raced under the name, Supermarine.

Trained by NSW mentors Christine and Alan Proctor, the son of Modern Assassin was a 15-time winner, including multiple victories at Wentworth Park.

These greyhounds, along with a plethora of others, prove looks aren’t everything when it comes to choosing your chaser, with some of the most successful and speedy chasers sporting roman noses and bob tails.
