Local stars looking to make their National impression

With the advantage of local knowledge, several of South Australia’s best greyhounds are looking to make their mark across Nationals week.

SA has always boasted a rich history of success at the Nationals with the likes of Kate’s A Scandal, Casino Tom and Worm Burner taking out the National Sprint title while Bay Road Queen and Bothing are among those to have claimed the National Distance title.

Leading the charge for South Australia in 2024 will be the 2023 South Australian Greyhound of the Year Zipping Neutron, who looms as the state’s key chance in the National Distance series.

Since crossing into the kennel of Tim Aloisi in May last year, Zipping Neutron has been a revelation recording 30 wins and 11 placings from 45 starts which is the most of any greyhound in Australia during that time.

Across those 30 victories, Zipping Neutron claimed several features events including the Bay Road Queen Stayers, Premiers Cup and the Bothing Stayers Cup as well as breaking track records at Mount Gambier and The Gardens.

“When he first came across, I threw him in the deep end. I got him and put him straight in,” Aloisi said of Zipping Neutron earlier this year.

“Every greyhound is different. I think I have a bond with the dog and when you are a trainer and working with the dog, some dogs you have a special connection with, and he is that and I love him.”

While Zipping Neutron has been the standout in South Australia, he has also taken down some strong interstate competition having broken the track record at The Gardens in New South Wales while also taking out the Premiers Cup on Adelaide Cup night in an enthralling battle with Moraine Suzie.

Aloisi has been a strong proponent of SA greyhound racing bringing high quality chasers into the state and takes pride in representing South Australia on the Nationals stage, having had both Zipping Neutron and Ravers Army qualify for last year’s Distance and Sprint finals respectively.

Zipping Neutron had no luck in finishing 6th at The Meadows in last year’s Group 1 final, but is a much-improved chaser and will be benefited by racing on his home track.

As well as the Distance champion, South Australia will also boast one of the key chances in Group 3 National Straight Track Final with Cash On Delivery currently racing in red-hot form.

Taking out the SA Short Course Greyhound of the Year after recording 23 wins and nine placings from 33 starts last year, Cash On Delivery has continued on the form into 2024 winning nine of his 10 starts including the 2024 Group 2 Thunderbolt at Grafton (NSW).

His straight track form at Murray Bridge is also excellent boasting eight wins and three placings from 11 starts and will be tough to beat with his experience on his home track.

The South Australian Sprint qualifier looks to be a wide-open affair with a mix of talented young chasers and experienced campaigners set to clash in the series.

The Kirin Corby trained Where’s Poppy is impeccably bred out of Sennachie x Fabwik and possess the early speed to be successful at Angle Park and after winning the SA Oaks last year will be one of the leading contenders.

The Ben Rawlings duo of Peaky Boo and Riot Rooster are two of the up and coming starts with Peaky Boo having finished in the Group 2 Launching Pad earlier this year while Riot Rooster has a personal best of 30.24 and was the winner of the EASTAR Match Race series.

With there being plenty of high-quality South Australian talent, the locals are hoping to shine in their home conditions and emulate the feats of Worm Burner in 2016.
