Each month Chase’s DAVID BRASCH highlights the stories behind Queensland’s most recent complete monthly breeding statistics – March 2024:
IT’S always exciting when a former star race bitch has her first litter. The expectation is understandable.
That’s the case with Clint Gill and Warren Nicholls’ great staying bitch Days Of Thunder (Fernando Bale-Melissa’s Pride), who has recently whelped three dogs and six bitches in her mating to Hooked On Scotch.
More and more progeny by Hooked On Scotch from daughters of Fernando Bale are emerging as racetrack successes.
Days Of Thunder, of course, was a special stayer, winning 19 and $336,000. She could storm home to victory against the best of them.
She won the G3 Origin Distance and G3 Super Stayers Invitation, but was third in the G1 National Distance and a finalist at G1 level in the Topgun Stayers and another National Distance, as well as a number of other feature races.
Days Of Thunder’s second dam was champion Cindeen Shelby and her own mother, Melissa’s Pride, has been a prolific producer.
PROVEN producers are worth their weight in gold.
Abby Boom (Fernando Bale-White Spyro by Disintergrate) is just that, having produced the Bernardo dog Get Carter (12 wins, $164,000).
Get Carter has proved himself winning the QGOLD Emerging Sprinters, finishing second in the G1 Ipswich Gold Cup, the G3 Qld Flame and the QGOLD Summer Sprint.
Now, Abby Boom has produced four dogs and three bitches by Superior Panama.
That Bernardo litter contains eight named offspring and all are winners.
Booming Boo Boo has won eight and $50,000 and Bernie Boom has won 10 and $41,000.
While Abby Boom won eight races and earned $16,000, she is a litter sister to Speed Star (47 wins, $104,000, finalist in four G2 finals). All her littermates could gallop.
Their dam, White Spyro, has been a fine producer.
It is the direct damline of Brindle County, the foundation bitch for the Northfield family on the Northern Rivers.
ASK Travis and Hope Elson what they think of their Fernando Bale-Nan’s Magic litter and you will spend the next couple of hours listening to the Yandina Creek dynamos wax lyrical.
Nan’s Magic (Magic Sprite-Summer’s Senor by El Grand Senor) was an Elson kennel star, winning 21 races and $66,000.
Travis and Hope put her to Fernando Bale and got a litter of 10 and ALL of them winners.
That was on display for all to see recently when Super Scrub (13 wins, $78,000) led throughout to win the G3 Young Guns at Albion Park.
Long before Super Scrub downed a hot field in that Young Guns, Travis and Hope had repeated the mating to Fernando Bale.
They got four dogs and three bitches which made Travis a happy, happy man.
Super Scrub is not the only star from the first mating. It also includes Aiden’s Queen (nine wins, $48,000), Danger Zone (seven wins, $47,000, another Young Guns finalist), Hope’s Zone (16 wins, $45,000), Speed Zone (six wins, $39,000) … you get the picture why the repeat mating was done.
SEINFELD fanatic Mark Saal already has a lengthy list of names for a litter of Aussie Infrared-Babs Kramer pups he has just bred.
There are five dogs and six bitches and the list of names Mark has all centre around Seinfeld episodes.
The dam Babs Kramer (Barcia Bale-Simply An Angel by Where’s Pedro) won just one race in 30 starts, but Mark knows only too well her ability.
She came from a litter of eight, seven of them winners and including classy Are Jay Junior (13 wins, $46,000), Simply Smooth (13 wins, $39,000) and Front Page News (12 wins, $47,000) etc.
She is also a half-sister to Mark’s Group star Pump It.
Babs Kramer is already dam of a quality litter by Zambora Brockie that includes Van Helsing (18 wins, $60,000), King Of Cool (nine wins, $38,000), Walk Right In (11 wins, $34,000) etc.
As would be expected, Mark has been inundated with buyers for the pups including the astute Steve Rolph.
ADAM Macintosh is scratching his head and in a rush to find a pup whelped back in March.
That’s because Adam has bred a one-pup litter, a bitch by Zack Monelli from his former smart bitch Pixie My Love (Dyna Villa-Cincinnati Juice), the dam a former finalist in the Rising Stars at Albion Park and a Young Guns at Capalaba.
Pixie My Love is a half-sister to Golden Joy, the dam for Adam of Golden Joy (the Listed Eric Thomson Memorial, second G3 Young Guns at Albion Park).
Pixie won 13 races and $34,000 on the track and this is the famous Tina’s Show direct damline.
Pixie’s littermate Inner Tea Cup won 17 and $66,000).
WAY up in Townsville, Rhonda Essery’s former track star, Samshu, has whelped two dogs and four bitches to a mating to Paw Licking.
How Rhonda found one of the few remaining straws for that speed star and much underrated stud dog, Paw Licking, is a credit to her.
Samshu (Fernando Bale-Jingling by Barcia Bale), is from the famous Cheeky Sprite damline. She raced 106 times for 27 wins and earned $76,000.
But, she is also a litter sister to Stratford who Rhonda took to 33 wins and stakes of $104,000.
Jingling is the second dam of that star NSW stayer Ritza Piper (Ritza Lenny-Ritza Vonnie) the winner of the G1 Topgun Stayers, G2 Summer Distance Plate, G3 Newcastle Cup, runner-up in the G1 Bold Trease, G2 Sydney Cup, G3 Xmas Cheer, The 715, and third in the G1 Association Cup and a finalist in the G1 Zoom Top.
This is also the damline of all those current Tzouvelis-kennel racetrack stars including recent G2 Ipswich Auction winner Saanvi.
DAUGHTERS of champion race dog Dyna Double One are really starting to emerge as successful producers.
The stars include Tim Zoo, Saige Tenniele, Afire, Plagiarise etc.
The Smashniak boys have their former multiple Albion Park winner, Smashniak Double (Dyna Double One-Key Missile by Take The Kitty) and she has whelped four dogs and four bitches to boom young sire Tommy Shelby.
Smashniak Double won 18 races and $49,000 but she is also a litter sister to Keysile (22 wins, $64,000), a finalist in the Canberra Cup.
Their mother, Key Missile, is a litter sister to former superstar Keybow winner of the G1 Perth Cup, G1 Brisbane Cup, second in the G1 Australian Cup, third in the G1 Melbourne Cup and G1 Winter Cup etc, and now a fine and much underrated stud dog.
The Tommy Shelby-Smashniak Double mating brings in some fabulous crosses including a 3×2 cross of Sky Fly High and Key Missile, who are bred along very similar lines.
JOHNNY Dart always had a huge opinion of Rumbling Away.
The Cosmic Rumble-Tahlia’s Way by Spring Gun bitch won seven races and $39,000. Her sister Savannah won six races and $20,000.
They are out of the great bitch Tahlia’s Way, dam of such track stars as Adulate (19 wins, $157,000), Very Handy (13 wins, $88,000), Black Comanche (19 wins, $83,000), the ill-fated Gypsy Del (nine wins, $63,000) etc.
Rambling Away has just whelped a litter of five dogs and four bitches and those pups bring in a fabulous 2×2 of identically bred Where’s Demonica and Tahlia’s Way … just the recipe for success among My Redeemer offspring.
HARA’S Penny is already proving herself at stud with her first litter, by Equalizer, starting to show promise.
Hara’s Penny (Fernando Bale-Hara’s Annie by Cosmic Chief) is a hugely in-bred bitch and the winner of 11 races and earner of $36,000 is a litter sister to Group stars Hara’s Clyde and Hara’s Panda.
Penny has just whelped a litter of six dogs and three bitches by Bernardo and it is a perfect mating for her.
