Paul Dolan looks back in greyhound history

CAPTION: Top trainer Andrea Dailly who won the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows with Ollie Bale back in January, 2014.

TEN YEARS AGO -– January 2014:

IONA SEVEN, trained by Robert Britton, wins the Group 1Paws of Thunder at Wentworth Park. The daughter of Swift Fancy and Iona Habit led all the way from box 6, at odds of $6. She won her heat from box 7 at the juicy price of $16.

OLLIE BALE, trained by Andrea Dailly, wins the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows. Kid Maximus and Top Innings were the placegetters.

AT THE END of 720 metres at Wentworth Park, the winning margin in the Group 2 Summer Plate was a nose. Victory went to the Steve Collins-trained Dyna Willow by that narrow margin over fellow Victorian, Norm Rinaldi’s Destini Fireball.

TWENTY YEARS AGO – January 2004:

HOTLINE HERO, trained in Victoria by Kel Greenough, wins the Group 1 Adelaide Cup by half a length. The locals didn’t get a look in. Second was Big Daddy Cool, trained in NSW by Nick Janic. Star Queenslander Bogie Leigh was a nose away third for Les Bein and Tony Brett.

BIG DADDY COOL put his very best foot forward in the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows. He romped home by 8.75 lengths over Harvey Bale.

IRINKA BARBIE has a comfortable two lengths win over Skipper Rip in the Group 1 Association Cup at Wentworth Park. The trainer was the late John Finn.

THIRTY YEARS AGO – January 1994:

QUEENSLAND trainer Tom Paterson staged an amazing and very dangerous drive to Sydney for the Group 1 Association Cup with his super stayer Worthy Reward. It was one of the worst bushfires seasons in NSW in many years, yet Paterson somehow managed to get past the fires on the North Coast, Hunter and Central Coast regions to arrive at Wentworth Park in time. Worthy Reward completed the fairytale yarn by winning by four lengths from box three.

PERPLEXED, trained locally by Don Foster, wins the Group 1 Adelaide Cup from box eight at $6.00. Star Victorian sprinter Golden Currency was the $1.30 favourite and finished second.

JAMB KID, trained by Ken Virtue wins the Group2 Cranbourne Cup. It was a two lengths victory from box one for the 10 to 9 ($2.10) favourite. Montroyal and Starlight Rebel were the placegetters.
