TEN YEARS AGO – 2010: He Knows Uno for Mick Patterson wins the Gr 1 Brisbane Cup over 520 metres at Albion Park. It was a head winning margin over Octane Show.

Octane Show made amends for that narrow defeat by winning the Gr 1 Hobart 1000 final a fortnight later, trained by Darren McDonald.

Symmetry for Robert Britton wins Australia’s richest middle distance race, the Gr 1 Sale Cup over 650 metres. It was a quality lineup. Sitka finished second, Bobby Boucheau was third. Queensland star Dashing Corsair finished eighth and last.

TWENTY YEARS AGO – 2000: Placard, owned by Terry Hill, trained by Ray and Ruth King, wins the Top Gun at Sandown, worth $100,000 to the winner. It was a fabulous field. English sprinter Droopy’s Zola finished second. Queenslander Winged Runner for John Reimer ran third. Then followed Melbourne Cup winner Go Wild Teddy, Dutchy’s Angel, Kantarn Bale, Classic Capri and Gentle Memory. Placard romped home by five lengths.

Top Shiraz, trained by Pat McClenaghan, wins the Gr 2 Hobart Thousand. Superstar Brett Lee finished second, beaten one length.

The finalists for the 2000 Queensland Greyhound of the Year were announced. Larraine Paterson’s Short Model, Marie Heck’s Son of Iron and John Reimer’s Winged Runner were the trio.

THIRTY YEARS AGO – 1990: Dixie Lass trained by Ken Howe wins the NSW St. Leger from box five. The $4.00 chance beat $51 outsider Centrefold Pet. Third home was the $2.50 favourite Tinahue.

Victorian star Highly Blessed turned the Gabba’s XXXX Trophy over 558 metres into a one act affair. The Lorraine Ferremi trained bitch won by ten lengths in a very slick 32.47 from box five.

The Silver Chief, run at Olympic Park in Melbourne, is Victoria’s equivalent of a state Derby. The winner was the $3.00 favourite Enfield, trained by Sta Johannesen. From box four, Enfield ran home an easy winner over Wild Cactus and Red Ripple.
