St. Pierre, a son of Surf Lorian, is a long-priced winner of the Group 1 Australian Cup at The Meadows. Trained in Tasmania by Debbie Cannon, St. Pierre beat High Earner and Mid Levels.
Bogie King, for Ryan Ayre, wins the Group 2 Queensland Derby at Albion Park in 30.11. Bogie King had won the Group 1 National Derby in the previous month.
The Group 2 Vince Curry Memorial Maiden is won by the Steve Lennon-trained Dance A Jig, covering the Ipswich 520 metres trip in 30.64.
TWENTY YEARS AGO – MARCH 2001
Brett Lee, trained by Darren McDonald, continued to achieve remarkable successes. In this month he won the Group Maturity at The Meadows in 29.75 and the Group 1 Australian Cup, also at The Meadows, in 29.49.
Awesome Attack, for John Clancy of the Northern Rivers, wins the Group 2 Vince Curry Memorial Maiden at Ipswich in 30.25.
Springtime Magic for Ron Ball wins the Group 2 Queensland Futurity at Albion Park in 30.42. Her overall first-class form, including a win in the Border Park Galaxy over 420 metres on grass at Tweed Heads, saw Springtime Magic win the 2001 Queensland Greyhound of the Year title.
THIRTY YEARS AGO – MARCH 1991
Boom sprinter Highly Blessed wins the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park from box four by five lengths. The Lorraine Ferremi-trained bitch was the $2.25 favourite. She ran a slick 29.98. Queensland star Cool Marvel finished second for Tony Zammit.
The Frank Daros-trained Just Jedda wins the National Futurity at Wentworth Park. She wore the green and white coloured number nine rug, having been the first reserve then obtaining a start from box three. The odds-on favourite Dixie Lass finished second, beaten a neck.
The National Distance Championship is run at Brisbane’s Gabba track. It’s a local win for the Dave Palmer-trained Just a Charm who scored by ten lengths in a slick 41.45 for the 704 metres course. The National Sprint Championship was run later in the year, won by Jessica Casey at Wentworth Park.
