Sale is a must-see on your travels

Have dog will travel! That is the motto of almost everyone in the greyhound industry and is the reason why its followers are among the most travelled of any Aussie. Regularly Chase will highlight a spot on the map of Australia, usually coinciding with a major greyhound race, and explain why you should stop off and smell the roses. This month we look at Sale in Victoria.

Plucked straight out of a storybook, the quaint city of Sale is becoming the new weekender for many Melbourne residents.

Just two and a half hours from Melbourne, this attractive and prosperous destination is located at the western end of the Gippsland Lakes.

The Port of Sale is by far the hub of the city and the entrance to the Gippsland Lakes. Recently the port has undergone a multi-million-dollar development, turning the port into the centre of entertainment lined with restaurants, art galleries, and a stunning boardwalk that links to a 5km walk along the historic canal.

The best way to scope out the waterways of Sale is by hopping on the Port of Sale Heritage Cruise.

Glide through the water taking in the birdlife, koalas and waterways, heading straight down to historic Sale Swing Bridge and down the highly regarded Thomson River.

Alan, the skipper, has spent most of his life in Sale and is extremely knowledgeable in local history. He was once a town engineer in Sale and now takes pride in showing off and educating people on his historic ‘home-town’.

The Sale Water Tower Museum somewhat resembles the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, however this tower is home to a museum and viewing platform. Situated in the beautiful Victoria Park, the museum showcases the history of the water supply in the town.
Sale is home to many quirky little museums including the signal tower museum and the Sale Powder magazine.

Located near Victoria Park and nestled away from the hustle and bustle of Sale’s main strip, the Hunting Ground Café is a true needle in a haystack. Be greeted by friendly staff and try the best coffee and wine in town whilst taking in the boutique style décor.

As you’re travelling out of Sale, be sure to stop in at Strafford, just 14 minutes from Sale and stop for brunch or a long lunch at the Badger and Hare, a quirky and unique café inspired by Melbourne’s laneway culture.

The café prides itself on three things – great coffee, great food, and customer experience.

Enjoy a glass of bubbles in the sunshine amongst the citrus trees and cottage garden.
