Have dog will travel! That is the motto of almost everyone in the greyhound industry and is the reason why its followers are among the most travelled of any Aussie. Each month Chase will highlight a spot on the map of Australia, usually coinciding with a major greyhound race, and explain why you should stop off and smell the roses. This month we look at Launceston.
Launceston, Tasmania’s second largest city is the perfect stop before visiting famous Cradle Mountain wineries.
The city attracts tourists with its charming old-timely allure and sweeping countryside views.
Launceston has the greatest concentration of large nineteenth century buildings of any city in Australia and so the Launceston Heritage Walk is truly something else.
Starting at Johnstone and Wilmot Store and, after 22 blocks including City Park and Princes Square, the walk returns to Civic Square.
The walks are split between an orange trail – Merchants Machinery – a 70 minute walk and looks at the industrial heart of the port of Launceston; the Pink Trail – Rags to Riches – a 90 minute walk that features the churches and commercial buildings; and the Blue Trail – Government to Gorge – taking visitors from the administrative heart of the city to Cataract Gorge.
The city’s main attraction, Cataract Gorge, is a beautiful park on the water with a quaint little bridge and the perfect spot for hiking, swimming, fishing, and picnics.
Snap an Instagram worthy picture of the stunning basin and take in the fresh country air. Take a ride in the Gorge Scenic Chairlift for uninterrupted views of the area.
Just 15 minutes from Launceston is the pleasant little town of Grindelwald, a charming Swiss Village.
The delightful community founded in the 1980s and has been built in traditional Swiss style. Grab some Swiss baked goods and take a stroll around the lush green gardens and surrounding lakes.
Lastly, a trip to Cradle Mountain, two hours west from Launceston, is a must-see for every traveller.
Walk the Dove Lake Circuit, have dinner at Devils at Cradle, and enter the underworld of Cradle with a canyoning tour.
