The Q is building inspiration

By Greyhounds Australasia CEO SIMON STOUT

The greyhound industry, just like the broader community, is faced with many challenges at present, with economic and political pressure seemingly casting regular shadows over our industry and its sustainability.

Despite this there are still many things to celebrate and look forward to that not only provide inspiration for us now, but will undoubtedly invigorate a future for generations to come.

In May, several Greyhounds Australasia (GA) Directors, received a firsthand preview of such an inspiration, when undertaking a site visit to The Q.

The Q will be Racing Queensland’s greyhound showpiece in the heart of Southeast Queensland.

It will house a world-first three racing tracks located on the one venue, all viewed from centralised race day amenities for participants and the public.

Being able to witness the scale and scope of the venue gave a fantastic appreciation of what a remarkable venue it is set to become.

When coupled with the growth of residential areas around the site, it is easy to see it becoming a destination for the local community and a wonderful conduit to the greater Brisbane area for the greyhound industry.

The Brisbane Winter Carnival has already entrenched itself as the ‘must do’ winter racing offering (particularly for the southerners chasing the sun) and come 2025, when given the opportunity to play out at The Q, it is sure to be placed on many more ‘Bucket Lists’ right around the greyhound community.

The May Board meeting saw the Board approve a number of rules related to substances. These included the introduction of exempted substances for the treatment of pannus, along with the introduction of residue limits for other substances including ketoprofen and procaine.

With a July 1, 2024, effective date slated, it is important to note that these rules are now subject to adoption by the respective controlling and  regulatory bodies and participants are encouraged to remain vigilant for any communication in relation to their implementation.

Another key item at the May Board meeting was the GA Budget for FY25.

To this point in time GA has been able to absorb the increased business expenses that have prevailed over the past few years, having not increased any fees since 2021.

Despite a desire to minimise impact to participants, it was felt that a modest increase for FY25 would prove more sustainable than having to address the disparity through a substantial increase in future years.

Accordingly, an increase of around 5% will apply to fees for GA Services from July 1, 2024.

The new financial year will also flag the introduction of an additional DNA service to industry, with the Parentage Certification service available from GA. From July 1, 2024, GA will provide a Parentage Certification service for any greyhound under the age of 24 months (named or unnamed), provided that the greyhound has been registered and microchipped.

The service will provide a certification of a greyhound’s parentage and a full pedigree certificate via DNA testing.

The Parentage Certification Service (PCS) will be available at a cost of $130 per greyhound.

As with the GA Breeding DNA test, the PCS DNA test must be completed and authenticated by a registered veterinarian with PCS Kits available from GA.

GA sees this new service as a significant advancement in providing breeders and owners significant peace of mind when purchasing or selling greyhounds, in particular when completing transactions of unraced pups.

Additionally, the PCS DNA test will also serve as the DNA confirmation for GA when the application of breeding registration is made for the greyhound. Therefore, if the greyhound has been Parentage Certified there will be no further DNA test required when registering for breeding with the Controlling Body.

Updates in relation to these items and other GA matters are available on the GA website.
