LIFE is pretty good for Chris Brydon.
The former New South Welshman has been based at Churchable, west of Brisbane, since just before Christmas. That is when he and wife Natasha jumped in the deep end – giving the greyhound industry their fulltime attention.
Ten months later it appears to be a good decision.
His 40-acre rearing and pre-training property has the ‘House Full’ sign up until next July, the couple’s second child is due in the next few weeks and a recent successful training run was capped off with a treble at Capalaba yesterday (Sunday).
“Things are going pretty well at the moment,” Brydon said. “The business is going well, we are getting the odd winner, we have some good pups coming through and the wife is also due to have a baby soon.
“The baby was due around November 20, but the latest advice is that it will be coming early.
“As far as the greyhounds go … I get enjoyment out of most of the things I do here. It is hard to win a race anywhere so you get the most enjoyment out of winning a race, but if you’re not winning then the other side of the business is your bread and butter and so you have that to fall back on.”
On Sunday at Capalaba Brydon was in the winners’ circle with:
Race 4 – Villante from Box 2. Time 20.44;
Race 6 – Queen Missile from Box 6. Time 20.15;
Race 11 – High Times from Box 8. Time 19.93.
“That was certainly very enjoyable,” he said of the treble. “High Times and Queen Missile are litter brother and sister and they are owned by Trent Rennex, from the Sunshine Coast. He has four dogs with me. Villante is owned by me. I bought him at the Ipswich Puppy Auction last year.”
The best of his 15 dogs in work is a kennel favourite Coonamble Kid (My Redeemer-My Kinloch), whose name is a reminder of the western NSW town where Brydon grew up and fell in love with greyhounds.
“We haven’t found the bottom of him yet,” Brydon said of Coonamble Kid. “He has run some decent times at Capalaba and Ipswich and won at Ipswich just the other day.
“He is looking alright and is still a young dog. He isn’t the best out of the boxes, but we are looking at improving that. Once he turns two and matures a bit more … he is the best prospect that I have at the moment.
“I also have some unraced pups (Zipping Garth-Annabel Keeping). They are in pre-training now and they have the potential to be better than anything I have in the kennel at the moment.
“They trialled very well at Capalaba the other day and haven’t had a start yet.”
(Brydon’s success continued today (Monday) with Shaquille’s (Zambora Brockie-Jack’s Girl) win in Ipswich Race 10.)
Sunday’s Capalaba meeting was also another big day for club favourites Helen Sant and Cliff Houston, with their kennel scoring a double:
Race 9 – Burnt Briar from Box 3. Time 19.67;
Race 10 – Tira Mira from Box 6. Time 19.56.
Helen still hasn’t lost her smile from Tira Mira’s third in the Capalaba Cup the previous Sunday.
