From Monday January 23, 2023, a new procedure will be in place guiding the provision of water for greyhounds in race day kennels.
The new procedure states that water may be provided to a greyhound by the trainer or by an authorised attendant while the greyhound is kennelled after racing.
This decision has been made in line with the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) and Racing Queensland (RQ)’s objective to maintain the highest level of welfare for racing greyhounds.
Greyhounds are ordinarily provided with access to drinking water at the wash down bays in the immediate post-race period and the new procedure will complement current arrangements.
Kennelled greyhounds will be allowed up to 600ml of water from a bottle with an intact cap seal following a race.
Please note that trainers are not permitted to supply their own water – the water provided must be supplied by the club hosting the race meeting.
Trainers must provide their own water bowl for each greyhound in accordance with the policy and present the water bowl to QRIC Stewards for approval before use. Please view the procedure linked below for examples of approved water bowls.
Trainers and handlers will be required to comply with club instructions regarding the safe and responsible disposal of unused water and recycling of water bottles.
If you have any questions about the new procedure, please contact stewards@qric.qld.gov.au.
