Paul Dolan’s greyhound flashbacks

TEN YEARS AGO – APRIL 2011: RADLEY BALE, trained by Graeme Bate for Paul Wheeler, wins the Gr 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park. It was an eight lengths victory in 29.67. He Knows Uno was second and Adam Maway third.

PEDRO’S THUNDER for Tom Tzouvelis wins the Ipswich Magical Puppy Auction final. Owners of the FGTS Syndicate picked up $35,000 for the win. Pedro’s Thunder romped home by seven lengths in 30.64.

ENRY WALT wins the Gr 2 Bendigo Cup. Owner-trainer Garry Ennis collected $28,000. It was the last Bendigo Cup run over 430 metres on the ‘old track’, the venue closing for around a year for a major upgrade.

TWENTY YEARS AGO – APRIL 2001: BRETT LEE romps home by five lengths in the Gr 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park. The Darren McDonald trained superstar ran 30.04.

VICTORIAN trained runners won both features at Cannington. Kantarn Bale for Graeme Bate won the Interstate Sprint Challenge. Tom Dailly won the Interstate Staying Challenge with Beauhaven Escape.

BIG BROTHER won the Anniversary Cup at Angle Park over 515m. Col Wachtel trained the son of Golden Currency. Angle Park commenced racing in April, 1972.

THIRTY YEARS AGO – APRIL 1991: COBBALEENA won two staying features for Mary Hodges. There was the Celebrity Cup over 720m at Wentworth Park, from box three. Then the Gabba Gold Cup in Brisbane over 704m, from box six.

THE INTERSTATE CHALLENGE at the Gabba over 704m was a NSW victory when the Warren Harper-trained Aztec Bale was too good for Inky Rose (Chris Hughes) and Gotta Be Solid (Dennis Reid). Cobbaleena didn’t contest this race.

SURPRISINGLY, Brisbane’s Liberal Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson lost the Brisbane City Council election to political novice Jim Soorley, an ex-priest from the Gold Coast. Soorley won a further three mayoral elections before standing down in 2003, declaring that he couldn’t handle attending any more school fetes.
