Wagga Wagga has plenty to offer

Have dog will travel! That is the motto of almost everyone in the greyhound industry and is the reason why its followers are among the most travelled of any Aussie. Each month Chase will highlight a spot on the map of Australia, usually coinciding with a major greyhound race, and explain why you should stop off and smell the roses. This month we look at Wagga Wagga.

A great introduction to the city is through its public art audio trail.

Grab a coffee and walk through the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, through the CBD and along Fitzmaurice Street, where a selection of artworks are plotted for everyone to view.

Scan the QR code at each stop to hear interviews with artists and the motivation behind each piece.

The art trail is 3km long and takes roughly 45-60 minutes.

Running through the Botanic Gardens, the Willans Hill Miniature Railway is sure to delight the whole family.

Take a look at the authentic station, booking office, and take a ride on the track that runs through the gardens and woodlands. The trains run on the first and third Sunday of each month. 10am to 2.30pm.

Never been to an inland beach before? Just five minutes from the city Wagga Beach is the perfect place to cool off with the family and spend a Sunday afternoon.

The beach is frequently used for kayaking and getting together with friends and family for a picnic or barbecue.

Experience local agriculture at the Bidgee Strawberries and Cream family-owned strawberry farm.

Kids and families love to get their hands dirty picking chemical-free delicious strawberries and indulging in homemade strawberry ice cream.

A hidden gem and continued restaurant favourite is Magpie’s Nest, an elegant stone stable built in the 1860s with vineyard views and a modern Australian menu.

Known as ‘the place of many crows’ Wagga Wagga’s first microbrewery, the Thirsty Crow is the perfect spot to stop in for a beer.

With more than 30 seasonal brews and a selection of wines and the best pizza in town, Saturday afternoon drinks and dinner is sorted.

Inspiring and vibrant, the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery displays the Riverina’s diverse arts culture.

Sitting on the banks of the Wollundary lagoon, the cultural precinct is housed in a stunning architectural complex, including contemporary art spaces and the award-winning National Art Glass Gallery, which features approximately 700 pieces.
