(Howie (aka Cambla Kid), may not have been a champion on the track, but he could always sniff out a yarn. Now retired, each month Howie hunts up morsels of news from his beloved Bundaberg club. Here’s his latest offering.)
ALL eyes on the prize, as we warm up in 2022 with the Country Cup, Young Guns, Australia Day Cup, and then really what it’s all about is ‘THE BUNDY CUP’!
This year sees the Bundaberg Cup (550m) with its highest prize money ever $60,000.
Yes you read right $60,000! That’s $40,000 to the winner! OH My!
And to sweeten the pot, this year there is a qualifying race – \’THE WILD CARD\’.
The Wild Card is also run over the 550m distance with heats being held on March 7 and the final on March 14.
The Wild Card is a local race in the lead up to the Cup in which the winner will gain automatic entry to the Cup Final without having to contest the Bundy Cup heats.
And here\’s the kicker, it\’s worth $25,000. That\’s $15,000 to the winner, but there is a criterion to qualify for this race, so please check with RQ if you have any queries.
The Bundy Cup heats are on March 21 with the final on March 28.
This 550m race has been run for more than 40 years, and winners include my old kennel mate Cambla Girl as well as Belli Ultra, Under Advice, Port Lisa, Miss Greer and Wilby Dusty to name a few.
It\’s an amazing race to watch on the beautiful 550m grass track with its long straight run to the first corner and again as they stretch out down the back straight before coming home around past the 550m boxes again.
The Bundy Cup brings trainers from far and wide in the hope of grabbing glory but it never ceases to amaze me how the locals rise to the occasion!
We are so proud of this track and excited to host locals, visitors, spectators for the running of the $60,000 \’Bundy Cup\’.
See you there.
Yours in racing spirit
Howie (AKA Cambla Kid)
