ZARA ZULU, trained by Rosalyn Hume, wins the Gr 1 Australian Cup at The Meadows. First prize is $175,000. Gordon Bale and Dyna Tron ran the placings.
THRILLING BRAT, trained in New Zealand by Karen Walsh, demolished his Aussie opponents in the Gr 1 Super Stayers at The Meadows. He won by 11.75 lengths. Adelle Bale and Shimaguni were the distant placegetters.
BELLAGIO LAD for Ron Ball wins the Gr 2 Queensland Derby. The son of Big Daddy Cool ran 30.43 on a rain-affected track. Seldom Said and Blue’s On Parade were the placegetters.
TWENTY YEARS AGO – MARCH 2002:
CARLISLE JACK, trained in Victoria by Bob Douglas, wins the Gr 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park. The margin was four lengths over Mint Mogo and Molly’s Osti.
M’LADY’S FOOL gives Tony Zammit his third win in the Queensland Futurity. M’Lady’s Fool beat Yo Yo’s Gem and Ozzy Cola. Zammit won the Futurity with Conquering Wind in 1994 and Ultra Dreams in 1996. The trainer’s win tally in the race remains at three since scaling back his training numbers in recent times.
MR. RELIABLE for Margaret Quarrell wins the Vince Curry Memorial Maiden at Ipswich from box two, giving the trainer her first and only win in the race. Duel’s Me Mum and April Showers filled the placings.
THIRTY YEARS AGO – MARCH 1992:
NOVEMBER SUNSET for Christine Oldfield wins the Gr 1 National Futurity from box six, running home a two-length winner over Worth Travelling and National Worth. The winner was the 6-4 ($2.50) favourite.
WARREN’S FLYER for Peter Dopson takes out the $100,000-to-the-winner Dapto Supercoat Classic from box five in 29.78. The $3.50 favourite beat Lucky Ferrari and Ace Bale. PACE GALORE, representing Victoria and trained by Charlie Mellia, wins the National Distance Ch’ship at Wentworth Park from box six. The $4.50 chance beat the $2.25 favourite Elusive Odie, trained by Tony Zammit representing Queensland.
