TEN YEARS AGO – May 2012: PEGGY MAY for Jason Thompson wins the Group 1 Sapphire Crown at Sandown. It’s a three-lengths win over Witch’s Potion and Carol Allen.

IRMA BALE wins the Group 1 Sandown Cup for Graeme Bate. He’s My Future and Miata filled the placings.

JORDY PORDY comfortably wins the Group 2 WA Derby, trained by Linda Britton.

TWENTY YEARS AGO – May 2002: THE AUSTRALIAN CUP at group one level goes to Isa Brown, trained by Robert Britton. Silver Saul and Final Conflict filled the placings.

TONY BRETT heads west with Macbeth’s Image who wins the WA Oaks at Cannington by three lengths over Little Lamplight and Lewis Clan.

BEENLEIGH CLUB in south-east Queensland is under pressure to merge with ‘down the road’ club Gold Coast, but resists the idea.

THIRTY YEARS AGO – May 1992: DONE GOOD, trained by Doug Payne, wins the Gawler Produce final. Hike Allover and Walthamstow ran the placings. First prize of $16,000 compared favourably to feature races run in other states that month. The Ladies Bracelet at Wentworth Park was for $10,000 and the Sandown Cup $12,000.

IPSWICH track in Queensland celebrated its tenth anniversary of racing, having opened on May 1, 1982.

FEARLESS MIDGE won the Queensland Puppy Classic, the last running of the race at Brisbane’s Gabba track before the move to Albion Park. Reg Crawford was the trainer.
