Pokie Payout gives Peter a special thrill

THURSDAY night victories at Albion Park might come thick and fast for the likes of premier trainers Tony Brett, Darren Russell, Tony Apap, Ray Burman and Tom Tzouvelis, but when Peter Sullivan recently landed his first win there it was a time to celebrate.

Mount Forbes-based Sullivan generally targets races at his home track of Ipswich and is happy to do just that.

So he was over the moon when Pokie Payout (Lightning Frank-Adelaide Bale) won a Thursday night Novice at headquarters.

\”It was a huge thrill,\” he said. \”I loved it, but it worked out even better because the bitch is owned by two of my very best mates Don Thirtle and Jason Pashley.

\”It was special because of that.\”

Don and Jason bought two from the litter and got Peter to rear the pups with one of his out at Mount Forbes.

\”When it was time for them to go into work, they just stayed with me,\” said Peter.

He believes Pokie Payout is showing strength at the end of her races and thinks the bitch will develop into a 600m performer in the not too distant future.

Peter has been back in the Ipswich area for the past 10 years getting a nudge into the industry through Terry Guymer.

\”I\’d been out at Charleville in the meat works for 12 years so I\’m a real bushie,\” admitted Peter.

His first ever greyhound purchase, a bitch named Bay Of Pearls, cost him the grand sum of $600.

\”And what a wonderful bitch she was for me,\” he said.

Bay Of Pearls (Go Wild Teddy-Kath\’s A Star) won 10 races for Peter, but it was as a broodbitch that she became a goldmine.

\”We bred four litters with her (to Oaks Road, Magic Sprite, Fernando Bale and Smooth Fancy) and every one produced quality dogs,\” said Peter. \”I had to stop racing Bay Of Pearls at two and a half because she did a stopper bone.

\”But she lived right up to 15 before she died of cancer last year.\”

She repaid Peter Sullivan over and over again through her pups.

Her best was It\’s Dyllan (Oaks Road-Bay Of Pearls) who Peter owned but the dog was trained by close friend Peter Wilson.

He won 22 races and $91,000 and ran a fourth grade class record at Albion Park of 29.58 back in April 2018.

\”Bay Of Pearls left us with some great daughters and one of those, Magic Kitchen, has produced Brother Jason for me,\” said Peter.

Brother Jason (by Worm Burner) ran 29.90 winning a heat of a maiden at Albion Park back in November but cracked a hock not long after. He is on his way back to the track.

Peter has five in training at Mount Forbes, among them Pokie Payout his first city winner.

It won\’t be long before many more follow.
